Summary
It is reported that, On the night of the incident, the vessel "Haili 5" was en route on its Guangzhou-Shanghai voyage, preparing to depart from the Pearl River Estuary, while the "Xichun" was entering the port. The "Xichun" is deployed on the Asia-Middle East route (AM1) and was currently operating its Ningbo-Nansha voyage, having previously called at Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, and finally Nansha. According to on-site personnel, the vessel "Haili 5" suddenly lost power and went out of control while underway, resulting in a violent collision with the "WAN HAI A17." The "Haili 5" immediately broke apart and began sinking rapidly, leaving all 15 people aboard stranded in the water.
The accident occurred at Mayoushi, located on the eastern side of the Lingding Waterway at the mouth of the Pearl River (coordinates: 22°16′36.60″N, 113°48′16.00″E). This area serves as a vital navigation hub for Guangzhou Port and the western port areas of Shenzhen. However, the waters here feature a complex navigational environment, with irregular tidal currents and the presence of undercurrents—specifically, ebb currents that can reach speeds of up to 2.0 knots. The original Mayoushi light vessel was temporarily removed in July 2024, leaving only a left-hand lateral marker in its place. This also increases the difficulty and risks of navigation to some extent.
It is understood that the "Haili 5" is a small, handy-type dry bulk carrier, built in June 2008. The vessel has a total length of 133.2 meters, a beam of 22.0 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of 13,582 tons. Meanwhile, the "Xichun" is an ultra-large container ship delivered in August 2024 by Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje Shipyard in South Korea to Wan Hai Lines. Measuring 335 meters in length and 51 meters in width, the ship boasts a deadweight tonnage of 144,572 tons and a maximum carrying capacity of up to 13,100 TEUs—of which 2,100 are equipped with refrigerated container sockets. Equipped with cutting-edge energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies, the vessel can cruise at speeds of up to 22 knots, making it one of the most modern and flagship ships in Wan Hai Lines' fleet today.

After the accident occurred, relevant departments swiftly activated the emergency response mechanism. The Guangzhou Ship Traffic Management Center immediately implemented temporary traffic control in the area where the incident took place, issuing navigational warnings via VHF high-frequency radio to guide passing vessels away from the hazardous zone, thereby preventing secondary accidents. Meanwhile, the Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center quickly coordinated resources from various agencies, launching an urgent search operation in the affected waters while simultaneously organizing traffic flow on-site. After a tense rescue effort, As of 4:54 PM on October 26, 13 out of the 15 people who fell into the water have been successfully rescued, but two remain missing. Search and rescue operations at the scene are still underway with full force.
To ensure the navigational safety of passing vessels, At 02:24 on October 26, the Guangzhou Maritime Bureau issued Navigation Warning No. Yuehangjing 375/25, clearly advising, "In the Pearl River Estuary, a sunken vessel has been reported within 1 nautical mile upstream and downstream of the Mayou Stone Buoy. Please exercise caution and give it ample berth." This warning addresses the navigational hazards caused by the recent collision accident, designating a danger zone for vessels passing through. It reminds ships to maintain safe distances and follow the traffic management instructions issued by the Guangzhou VTS Center as well as the on-site maritime patrol vessels, ensuring orderly passage.
Maritime safety must not be overlooked. This recent collision of vessels in the Pearl River Estuary has sounded a serious alarm for all parties involved. Relevant authorities should further strengthen navigation safety management, improve navigational infrastructure, and enhance emergency response capabilities. Meanwhile, shipping companies should also step up vessel maintenance and management to ensure that ship equipment operates smoothly, thereby preventing similar accidents from happening again. Additionally, we would like to remind everyone here… Dear shippers and freight forwarders, please stay updated on the latest developments of the incident, keep a close eye on your shipments, and take proactive measures to prevent unnecessary cargo losses!
